Dear County official:
On January 12, 2018, the Indiana Department of Revenue (DOR) will be systematically closing over 8,100 inactive business withholding accounts to reduce unnecessary mail and post office returns.
These inactive accounts often occur when a business has closed, but the withholding tax account has not been closed. As a result of these inactive accounts, Best Information Available bills continue to be issued, resulting in high volumes of unnecessary returned mail, uncollectable debt processing and levy or garnishment activity.
When these accounts are closed, officials will see an usually high number of both Clerk Satisfaction of Lien and Warrant Status letters. They should recognize this is part of a systematic effort to reduce unnecessary efforts for all parties involved.
If you have any questions or concerns, you may call the Payment Services department at DOR at: 317-232-2165, Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. – 4:30 p.m., EST.
Sincerely,
Indiana Department of Revenue Customer Service Team
